I.M. Pei initially wanted to build a brick Gothic-style building, but the idea was cancelled due to the many earthquakes in Taiwan. Later, Chen Chi-Kuan used a hexagonal base like the shape of an "inverted boat bottom" and revised the shape of the church one by one to form the current church. The church was built by Mr. Henry R. Luce, founder of the famous American magazine Time and Life, in order to preach the gospel and to honor the memory of his father, Mr. Henry W. Luce.
